Equine Mortality Coverage Form
The American Reliable Equine Mortality policy insures the horse against death, authorized humane destruction, theft, and certain specific conditions when these events occur during the policy period and are reported as required. Coverage applies only to horses listed on the policy declarations.
What’s Covered
- Mortality caused by a new accident, injury, lameness condition, lameness injury, physical disability, illness, or disease that first occurs during the policy period and is reported during that time.
- Theft of the horse when specific reporting and recovery conditions are met.
- Wobbler Syndrome diagnosis for horses 12 years old or younger, when confirmed by two veterinarians and meeting all policy requirements.
How Losses Are Paid
- Pays the agreed value listed in the policy schedule.
- Agreed value may be automatically reduced when the horse is entered in a claiming race or public auction at a lower value.
- Claim payment may be proportionally reduced if you have sold or reduced your ownership interest.
What’s Not Covered
- Any injury, illness, lameness, or disease that occurred before the policy period.
- Fraudulent or malicious acts by you or anyone with care or control of the horse.
- Mysterious disappearance or voluntary parting with the horse.
- Improper care, neglect, or failure to maintain vaccinations and deworming.
- Government-ordered destruction (except limited air transit exceptions).
- Medication administered improperly or without veterinary direction.
- Losses resulting from nuclear, war, or similar hazards.
Important Requirements
- The horse must be in sound health at the start of the policy period.
- Proper care and attention must be provided at all times.
- You must notify the insurer before changing the horse’s insured use.
- The horse must remain in the U.S. or Canada unless endorsed otherwise.
- Immediate notice of any accident, injury, illness, lameness, or death is required.
- A necropsy is required for all mortality claims.
- Proof of loss must be submitted within required timeframes.
