$10,000 Colic Treatment & Surgery Endorsement
This $10,000 Colic Endorsement adds a separate Additional Coverage for Colic Treatment to an Equine Mortality – Broad Form policy. It reimburses certain colic-related veterinary expenses in exchange for an additional premium, subject to a deductible, co-pay, exclusions, and claim duties.
What’s Covered
- Pays reasonable and customary veterinary fees for colic treatment provided by a qualified veterinarian.
- Coverage applies to treatment from the endorsement effective date through the end of the policy period, or up to 120 days after the policy period ends (only if the policy period is 365 days or longer).
- The colic incident must first occur while the endorsement is in effect and be reported during that time.
- “Colic treatment” can include medications, treatments, or surgical procedures (including anesthesia) for colic.
What’s Not Covered
- A horse with a prior colic or gastrointestinal disorder history, unless fully disclosed and accepted before the endorsement effective date.
- Treatment that is for a condition other than colic, routine/maintenance/preventive care, not provided by a qualified veterinarian, related to malicious/intentional acts, poisoning, or gross negligence, or for a horse under 30 days or over 20 years old at the endorsement effective date.
- Certain costs: necropsy, authorized humane destruction/intentional destruction, disposal, vet call/travel charges, and transport.
- Hospitalization/boarding charges from facilities that are not an accredited veterinary school or licensed veterinary clinic.
- Fees to prepare required veterinary reports.
- Ulcer diagnosis/treatment, except as part of covered “colic treatment.”
How Losses Are Paid
- Limit: Up to $10,000 aggregate per horse.
- Deductible: $250 per separate, unrelated, non-recurring colic incident (per horse).
- Co-pay: After the deductible, insurer pays 80% and the insured pays 20%, up to the $10,000 limit.
- Premium: $150 per horse. If a claim is paid under this endorsement, that $150 is fully earned and immediately due.
- Payments under this endorsement do not reduce limits available under other parts of the policy.
Colic Treatment & Surgery coverage may also be combined with $15,000 or $10,000 Major Medical, $7,500 Medical Assistance and / or the $10,000 Colic Treatment & Surgery coverages also offered by Great American.
