$10,000 Surgical Expense Endorsement
This Surgical Endorsement adds surgical expense reimbursement to an Equine Mortality – Broad Form policy. For an additional premium, it helps pay certain covered surgery costs, subject to an aggregate limit, deductible, co-pay, exclusions, and claim requirements.
What’s Covered
Pays reasonable and customary veterinary fees for surgery under general anesthesia by a qualified veterinarian when:
- The surgery is performed during the endorsement term (or up to 120 days after the end of a 365-day policy), and
- It’s needed due to an accident/illness/injury/lameness/physical disability that first occurs during the endorsement term.
Also covers certain ulcer medication/treatment prescribed as follow-up to covered surgical treatment, up to $2,500 (still subject to deductible/co-pay/aggregate limit).
What’s Not Covered
Common exclusions include:
- Pre-existing conditions (before the endorsement effective date).
- Certain deformities/congenital defects and related complications.
- Routine/preventive care, elective procedures, and many alternative/non-traditional therapies (as listed).
- Losses tied to intentional harm/poisoning/gross negligence.
- Horses in race training/used for racing, or under 30 days / over 20 years old at endorsement effective date.
- Various non-covered expenses (transport, vet call/travel, report-prep fees, non-qualifying hospitalization/boarding, etc.).
How Losses Are Paid
- Limit: $10,000 aggregate per horse.
- Deductible: $250 per separate, unrelated surgical incident (per horse).
- Co-pay: After deductible, insurer pays 80% / insured pays 20%, up to the limit.
- Premium: $150 per horse (fully earned and immediately due if a claim is paid).
Surgical Expense coverage may also be combined with $15,000 or $10,000 Major Medical, $7,500 Medical Assistance and / or the $10,000 Colic Treatment & Surgery coverages also offered by Great American.
